The Cathedral of Santa Maria de Girona is located at the highest point of the city and has the widest Gothic nave in the world, with a total width of 22.98 metres.

Its construction began in the 11th century in the Romanesque style , followed in the 13th century by the Gothic style, with only the 12th century Romanesque cloister and the tower from the same period dating from 1040 remaining; it was completed in the 18th century . It is a Site of Cultural Interest.
