Where Two Paths Part: Albarracín

At the centre of the scene, a modest house of stone and plaster divides the street into two possibilities, and two lanterns — one on each side — hold the composition in an unintentional symmetry. The wet cobblestones return the light in a thousand irregular fragments, and the sky keeps that saturated blue that lasts only a few minutes after sunset. There is no one. The photograph does not look for the monument, but for the domestic geometry of a village that has spent centuries organising its life around a corner.
