Escola Pia, After Midnight

This passage is Carrer de l'Escola Pia, one of the narrowest streets in the Barri Vell: it runs beside the Torre Vescomtal, a watchtower of Carolingian origin (9th–10th century) built with material from an earlier Roman tower, and passes beneath the Portal de l'Escola Pia — also known as the Portal de Sant Martí — opened in the 11th century as the city's southern gate. The writer Josep Pla described it as a street barely seven palms wide, twisting between bare walls and houses of a mysterious, tormented appearance; at night, empty and lit by no more than a single lantern, it keeps that same unease intact.
