This vaulted passage is Carrer de Cúndaro, named since the 19th century after Fra Manuel de Cúndaro (1768–1856), a Franciscan friar who fought in the sieges of Girona of 1808 and 1809 and later wrote an account of them. It was previously called Carrer de l'Ardiaca, after opening beside the Cathedral archdeacon's house, and its course still follows a street of Roman origin. It links the upper edge of the old Call Jueu with Carrer de la Força, where tradition places the house of Bonastruc ça Porta — the Girona-born rabbi, philosopher and physician also known as Moses ben Nahman (Nahmanides) — at the corner where the two streets meet. The vault covering its central stretch gives it the close, mysterious air that this night photograph, free of tourists and lit shopfronts, leaves untouched.
