There is no safety distance in this image: it was taken from inside the correfoc itself, at the same level as the dimonis, with sparks falling on the camera too. The devils advance with arms raised, holding the “carretilles” that burst into fire above their heads, while the rest of the crowd shields itself, pushes forward, and laughs through the smoke. This is the more physical, less contemplative face of the tradition: ritual, yes, but also body, adrenaline, and shared street.
Photographing this required the same documentary discipline I apply to any other piece — no added light, no frame repeated in a studio — but here the challenge wasn't patience in front of motionless stone, it was reaction speed in front of a moving body. The result is the closest to the action of anything in the collection.
