Nocturne in Blue: The Cathedral of Girona

Ninety stone steps rise toward the Baroque façade of the Cathedral of Santa Maria, while at their base two silhouettes converse, tiny against the monument’s scale. The shot preserves the true atmosphere of the night: the deep blue of the cloudy sky contrasting with the amber of the streetlights that the city itself switches on every evening—no lighting was installed for the photograph. The result is an almost cinematic portrait of Girona’s most celebrated staircase, captured at the exact moment when the city, emptied of tourists, once again belongs to those who live there.
