One Lantern, One Façade

A single lamp is enough to sculpt an entire facade. In this piece the light source is deliberately scarce: the rest of the composition is built by deduction, so that shadow suggests more than it reveals. The medieval stone of Albarracín, worked almost like sculptural relief, emerges from the darkness exactly where the light chooses to —not where the photographer would have preferred—. That surrender to lighting accident, rather than to planned composition, is what gives the image its almost documentary character.
