Storm of Sparks: Correfocs, Mataró

A figure in a devil's mask raises a flare whose sparks burst over a crowd given over to fire in the streets of Mataró. The smoke, the golden light and the silhouettes of the onlookers turn the street into an almost ritual space, in which everyone seems to hold their breath at once.

As in other pieces of the series, I wanted to photograph the correfoc from the inside: not as a spectacle to be watched, but as a physical, noisy, shared experience. Here human scale is lost among the sparks, and the result is a storm of light that barely lets you see where the fire ends and the people begin.
