The Arch at Twilight: Paris

The Arc de Triomphe stands alone at the center of the frame, the empty roadway at its feet and a sky shading from violet to orange behind its bas-reliefs. Without traffic or crowds, the monument regains a calm and a scale the city rarely grants it.

I am drawn to architecture when it is left alone with the light. Here the symmetry of the arch and the horizontal of the horizon hold each other in balance, and the sky does the rest: it turns an icon known to everyone into a serene, almost contemplative image.
