The Long Crossing: Mérida's Roman Bridge

From the bank of the Guadiana, the eye travels arch after arch along the Roman Bridge until perspective merges them with the lights of modern Mérida beyond. A single lamppost in the foreground sets the human scale against a feat of engineering that has withstood two thousand years of floods.

This is the widest, most serene view in the series devoted to the bridge, composed to convey a sense of passage: the crossing, both literal and symbolic, between the Roman city and the city that still inhabits it today.
