The Vaulted Passage: Carrer dels Tallers, Barcelona

On Carrer dels Tallers, in Barcelona, a cobbled passage leads beneath a succession of vaults, bicycles resting against the wall and, at the far end, an opening through which the light enters. The paving, a deep, almost mineral green, guides the eye toward the end of the route.

The light arrives faint and filtered, and color is reduced to deep greens and muted ochres. A street that seems to have stopped in time: everyday and yet almost stage-like. As in other pieces in this series, I am drawn to the city of interstices, that discreet place where a worn stone says more than a monument.
