The Watchful Tower, Girona

Only the bell tower rises above the irregular profile of the Barri Vell rooftops, silhouetted against a night sky where the moon can be made out among high clouds. Inside the bell tower, a single bulb—the same one used by the tower’s guardians, not an added spotlight—illuminates the bell and turns the stone the color of aged gold. It is an image of silent vigilance: the city sleeps beneath the gaze of its oldest tower, while the geometric forms of the medieval houses create a frieze of shadows in the foreground.
